Title: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: Tim_B on March 25, 2021, 06:59:57 AM
Now I know this may seem like an obvious question, with a typical answer of "the reg and the shroud", and I wouldn't disagree as I personally think the MFR in standard form is very hard to beat in both performance and looks.

So, if someone loses the shroud and puts a normal barrel on, is it still MFR?  If someone puts a bigger bottle on, but the same reg, is it still MFR?

Probably doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but interested in thoughts.

Thanks
Tim B

The ability to remove the bottle without bleeding air off is a key feature of an MFR in my opinion.

I would say the stock - as it covers part of the 50mm buddy bottle. But again the full length shroud and non burp regulator all come together to make the MFR 👍

As both have said above ,but you could also order a MFR without a shroud and with screw cut barrel ,i have MFR'd all my rapids as the non burping makes life so much easier .

I think the standard MFR with the shroud and slim lines of the stock is one good looking gun. I know guys take the shroud off or even replace it and that includes myself.

So the MFR for me is the reg and bottle set up with no burping the bottle off and the standard MFR stock.

Interesting....so basically it boils down to the reg.

I personally can't lose that shroud.....just like the standard look too much

For me it's only an MFR if it's the same as it was when it left the factory

Don't forget the "posh" MFR the TTR1/2 both in my opinion one of the best looking air rifles ever made .

I do like them, but would want to shoulder one to make sure it fits.....I can't help but think of an enlarged S200 when I see them....I know thats sacrilege and my brain works in funny ways  :P

This may be more to your liking @Tim_B, a shroudless MFR.

Lovely grain on the stock, but I'm a lefty so its lost on me....plus a MFR has to be shrouded to be called one in my book   8) :P :-X

Lovely example though

Think I'm with you Tim, I like the mfr with the 280 bottle and shroud, once they are taken off and changed for a mod and bigger bottle you lose the lines of the mfr. The gun would still be an mfr with the reg but for me, 280 bottle, and shroud keeps it right. Why do I keep selling mine!

scalloped block.thats how it got its name multi function rifle.use with mag or single loading.of course the reg.some left factory with standard shroudless barrels as special orders.i was not keen on the shrouds but they grew on me.as to be steel though don't like the carbon shrouds as all.

So what's different between the mk 2 and mfr they both have scallop blocks ,
Can the serial numbers tell what gun it is ?
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: KevG on April 01, 2021, 05:28:27 PM
originally it was just the mfr with a scalloped block.the mk2 was standard.eventuly they phased the mk2 block out and did them all with scallops.

Do they both have the same triggers, blocks bottles and regs and barrels , mine has a 12 " barrel ,a bottle you don't have to pop off
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: Ca_Varminter on April 01, 2021, 06:29:32 PM
The MFR was the Rapid Sexy Sister!!
Specifically made to use the 280cc bottle with the New valve and Regulator....
Simply unscrew and change bottles.. no Burping...
Also First with the Scallop cut into the Receiver and new Mark 3 Trigger cassette.
The first to have a shroud to help quiet it down and keep it streamline...
It was made to be light, well balanced, and to squeeze as many Good shot out of a 280cc bottle as possible!!
Of course, this lead to the Mark 4 trigger, and the S-type Rapid.. The Big Brother!!

So learnt something about the scalloped block - that's for that Kev.

In reality then the only difference for the later ones will be the reg.

You just answered the question to the thread !an mfr has a shrouded barrel, and that's my opinion to ,it should have been mfr1 if they were meant to have standard barrels and mfr2 if they were shrouded ,I've never seen an mfr advert with a standard barrel, there wouldn't be a ttr1 and 2 or is everyone saying a ttr1 is just a ttr 2 without shroud and a ttr2 is a ttr with a shroud🤔

How long are the barrels ,mine is 12 " sitting inside a bucketboy shroud, its actually about 2 " shorter than the 280 cc cylinder

Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?

I don't think it would have been made that way, it would have been shortened I reckon.

When I go down the chassis route a supper compact shroud will be in order ,do you know anyone with a raw with a supper short barrel and shroud ?
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: Tim_B on April 04, 2021, 08:29:40 AM
Yep. 8).   Mine  8). Pic below is with a 200cc bottle.  If I use an original 280cc bottle then it's level with the end of the barrel - two different looks.

I have just picked up a slightly longer barrel so I can get the same look either with the 200cc or 280cc bottle.

The downside is it's quite air hungry, so I'm in the process of setting up to balance power v air usage

Love that gun ,I know they look Uber cool but I won't be having a folder would probably run a gen 1 prs stock heavier than the ctr but adjustable for lop and cp height .
How long is your barrel Tim.
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: Tim_B on April 04, 2021, 12:14:33 PM
I think from memory the barrel is 10.5 inches - the shroud is circa 13 end to end (but I'd need to check that)

I don't think you would want to go shorter  :D.   But you could
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: KevG on April 04, 2021, 12:45:48 PM
shortest I done was 8 inches. accuracy was still spot on.in fact it improved slightly. of course shot count suffered.

That's a short barre Kev - how did you go about balancing the air usage?  SSG or a different way?   Higher reg pressures/stronger spring etc?
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: Daztilley on April 04, 2021, 01:41:16 PM
One of kevs double tap inertia setups would help - stops hammer bounce and gives the same results as an SSG but does it in a different way 👍
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: KevG on April 04, 2021, 03:02:51 PM
on that individual gun did nothing else as it was down to the owner what they wanted doing.but normally would fit DTI and set reg to suit.you can get decent shot count on short barrel smaller air capacity.got a .20 cal on 11.5 inch barrel and 200 cc bottle and that does around 220 shots per charge.

The cylinders just need to be the same Model/size... No Extreme Matching needed....
The Twin Bottles screwed into a manifold. Here their pressures are equalized.
Then the manifold is mounted on the Regulator/bottle adapter.

Well at the mo the reg is 110bar with hammer giving low 11's - haven't done a shot count yet but you can hear the "air hunger"  8).  I was going to try a ssg, however the DTI has got me intrigued - maybe I should send the block up to you for sorting.    :D.    The raw quickfill reg is also playing up - not settling very quick at all, think it's to do with the float and core......maybe two birds with one stone.   8)

Consistency was around 15fps so not bad.  Start pressure was 200bar, finished at 100 bar for 50 shots.    :-X   Something not set up right.
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: Daztilley on April 05, 2021, 05:53:53 PM
Yep you should be getting a lot more than that , especially as it's regulated. Could be down to a weak valve spring allowing the valve dwell time to be excessive. That would use too much air per shot and give such a low shot count.
Title: Re: What makes a MFR a MFR?
Post by: Tim_B on April 06, 2021, 05:54:32 AM
Yes - I know the reg is sound as it was the one I was using with the standard barrel.    Its being packaged up this week and off to Kev to have a play with.  The Raw quickfill is the worst one I have had.....the others I got directly from Raw, but this one came from Airgun Nation - I assume set up for FAC.  The transfer port is alittle wider than normal to allow for more air.

As you say, the valve spring, or even the valve.   I know Kev will sort it, so happy days   ;D

will do my best.the trick for setting regs is to make sure its set at enough pressure to be able to go around 20 to 30 fps more than you need.then back of on the hammer spring pre load
