I met up with one of my oldest friends for a pint today after too many years apart. We recalled the day we went to recover his brothers motorcycle from Leyland in Lancashire.
In 1985, my mate and his two brothers set off from Crewe to Heysham to get the ferry to the Isle of Man for the TT races. On the way one of their chains snapped on the M6 motorway, so they shoved the bike to a garage in Leyland and negotiated safe storage for a week, then the stricken biker jumped on the pillion of one of his brothers and they continued.
A week later I'm in the pub and the eldest brother, Neil, asked me if I'd help to bring the bike back to Crewe on the train as we'd both got free railway passes as we are staff. So, the next day we catch a train to Leyland and it's a boiling hot June morning. Arriving in Leyland we exit the station and Neil says "this way mate" so, off we go to the right for about 2 miles past Leyland Paints, Leyland Trucks, Leyland Trucks Distribution, left onto a dual carriageway for another mile past the same factories, left again and again. In the end we'd walked about 6 miles in scorching heat and we were knackered, sweating and near death. We arrive at this little garage and the owner gave us some water while Neil paid a fiver for the safe storage. As we're pushing the disabled bike out of the door, the owner says "where have you got to take that lads?" We replied "all the way to the station mate". Well, this was the Only Fools And Horses Chandelier moment....
" Oh" he says, "it's only about a hundred yards down there on the right."
I couldn't stop laughing all day today, even when mowing the lawn in a light shower. Great memories!
