MFR Reg help

Hi all,

MY reg finally started leaking, and after fitting new seals it is giving me nothing but trouble.

If I screw the valve core in all the way, it seems to block the reg and no air gets through from the bottle.  If I back off the reg core from the Outer Body, I get leaking from the bottle to reg interface.

Should the reg core be screwed fully tight to the reg body?  The end of the reg core is sealed off with a small bit of nylon? it seems like this is bottoming out on the back of the push pin stopping air getting in if the core is screwed up tight.  Should this piece of nylon/Delrin be there?

Cheers

Well it looks like you have Multiple problems.....

The Nose seal in your photo needs to be replaced!
It could have been damaged if you turn the reg core
to forcefully....

As to the air leak...
This due to one of many O-rings the could be involved...
Depending where is the air leaking From!

KevG is you man to fixed it up!!
Good Luck,
Stuart

Thanks Stuart,

in normal use I assume the valve core should be finger tight to the body?   Am I right in saying I have a micro reg core?   Kev did service the reg years ago but I cant remember if he fitted one of his cores or not!

If it is leaking where the bottle meets the Reg.
Then it is the small O-ring on the depressing pin...

hth,

thanks Stuart, yes I have changed that too.

its really odd, in that if the reg core is screwed down hand tight, no pressure gets through the reg at all, but also the bottle doesn't leak at the interface.

However, if I unscrew the reg core by approx. 1/2 turn, I get pressure behind the reg but then the bottle interface also leaks!   I just don't understand it at all.  Is it possible the valve pin in the reg has moved/turned within the reg body somehow?  I don't have the tool to remove it, but it seemed tight when I tried to rotate it with a couple of drill blanks but its all I can think of as it was ok before I touched anything other than a small leak from the reg breather hole.

Well now we are back to a multiple problems..

First, when you screwing down the reg core..Tight.
You have just smashed the nose seal against the air inlet nozzle.
So No air coming in..no air to leak....

So when you hear air leaking at the bottle junction when you loosen the core
This slounds like the seal behind the push-pin/inlet disk needs replacing...

Your Reg should have two holes.. Like the one in my photo..
The larger threaded hole is for the grub screw that Locks the inlet/depressing disk in place!

If you hear air coming from the bleed/equalization hole.. this is a O-ring sealing problem with the core..

KevG is the  person to talk to over there..
He can fix the leaks a set it for you

Good Luck,
Stuart

Thanks Stuart,  that makes sense now.

A man with a little knowledge (me) is a dangerous thing!

I had assumed the push pin/inlet disc was screwed in.  I didn't realise it had a seal behind it.  I will try to get hold of Kev.

The oring on the locking collar may be tired.alowing you to screw the collar in to far.you should have travel on the core.if you remove nylon nut and belleville washers you can then check travel.you may have none and have reg lock.thing is the collar needs to be finger tight.so you may need a new oring.the purpose of the oring is to give you some adjustment as there are 4 parts to the reg that dictates this.with things being mass produced you get tolerance differences.the oring is not a very good idea as they age and can go hard or perish a d can upset the reg settings.

Cheers Kev/Stuart,

After Stuart showed me the O ring behind the push pin which I never knew existed I had another go.  I changed that one, and tried again.  I have managed to get it working with no discernible leak, shooting very consistently.  However this still required me backing off the reg core collar. I suspect maybe I used the wrong O ring on the core and needed a bigger cross section than I used.  This would hold the core back as Kev says and allow it to be done up finger tight.   I ordered a new seal kit earlier so when that arrives I will also check what seals it has and compare.  I used seals I have previously bought many years ago but maybe the one I needed was previously used up and I therefore used the wrong one.  The one I took off was knackered so difficult to determine what size it should have been!

When you can fit me in Kev, can I send the reg to you for a proper once over and potentially upgrade?  -you last serviced the reg about 8years ago but I know how busy you are!

Thanks again everyone.  Great to have a proper forum again.  Between Stuart and Kev, you both first gave me advice when I bought my first rapid 11years ago, and its great to see you still here passing on your knowledge.

Just noticed on the picture the core sealing face is trashed.this can cause a lazy reg and creep.
