Hi,
Probably well known to many on this forum, but these are the four basic rules of safe gun use given to me by a Deputy Sheriff friend of mine in the US.  I thought it worth writing them down as they have stood the test of time..

Always presume a gun is loaded unless you have checked it yourself.
Always know your target and what is behind it.
Never point your gun at something you do not intent to shoot.
Never put your finger on the trigger before you are ready to fire.

He also then added one of his own which I liked..

Always know the whereabouts of your gun and who has access to it.

Hope these are of some use, if you have better please feel free to add..

An add line to go with "Never put your finger on the trigger unless you are going to fire"....
Never rely on the safety on your gun

We are taught these rules in our Hunter Safety Classes.
Over here in the USA...
