Title: .20 Fans Your Opinions Please
Post by: rgc_swanseaARC on June 11, 2020, 09:13:31 AM
Hi Gents,

I have a TTR with a custom barrel in .177 cal.
It is an absolute laser with JSB Exact Express.

However, there's always been a little bit of me that wants to try .20 as ive heard so many people rave about it over the years.

With a rapid its an easy enough swap, probably costing around £150-£200 and i could either keep or sell off the .177 parts if i ever wanted/needed to.

So the question is, is .20 all its cracked up to be? Is it worth me doing?

Regards,
Rhys

I Love my .20 Rapid
My rapid lived up to The marketing Hype!
The .20 was supposed to as accurate as a .177 but had like a .22!
This how Beeman advertise it...
It's main diet is .20 Premiers, I still 2 brown boxes of the original..
But it also like the JSB..
So this is the downside... Limited pellet choices!!

Good Luck,
Stuart

Well I own both the .177 and the .20.
I must confess that my .177 has not been out of the safe in two years.
As you say they are like a laser.
The .20 is the same once you get used to it with that pin point accuracy and the devastating impact of a .22.
As Stuart said above getting the right ammo is something else.
I use the h/n ftt in mine.
Regards Kev.

I thought about building my mk2 in .20 but opted for .177.
Mostly put off by pellet options: two maybe three horse race.

Whats it like shooting a .177 compaired to the .22 for say shooting pigeons, Because i`ve always shot .22 and i`ve always wondered about the .177

I have shot both and what is important is shot placement.
Both the .177/.22 are capable of doing a fine quick clean dispatch of them with the right shot placement.
Regards Kev.

So .177 dont really have that much to offer if i place the pellet in the right place is that what your saying.

Pigeons?........177 is paper punching calibre  :D

To be totally honest I haven't shot a .177 at game in over 25 years and used FAC .22 exclusively for 23 years.
I have an inherited Webley mk3 Supertarget in the cupboard... but this Mk2 build  is the first time I've chosen .177 since I was 14 years old.
I'm .22 through and through.

The last brand new sub-12 I bought was an AGC Zephyr 77 in 1987 in .22...the man at AGC almost pleaded...'Are you sure you want .22?'
My father shook his head ' .22? You really should have gone for .177'

My Rapid is .22 and tbh, i`ve never have any problems dropping my pigeons tbh,....I`ve just always  wondered about the other options if you understand, But i`m guessing alot of other have too.

Well the Big advantage of the .177...Inherent Accuracy..This why they are used in Competitive
Taget shooting.....
The .22 better balistic coefeceint, hard hitting...
So When Dr Beeman start to sell Americans on the .20 cal..
You have the accuracy of the .177 and the downrange hard hitting of the .22!!!

Stuart

my uncle had a .20 Sheridan, one of the perks of knowing USAF base personnel.
My father said it was alright for a 'pump' but the pellet choice was limited ......that was about 45 years ago.

Well in the beginning there was the fancy Yellow plastic box for the Sheridan Pellets...
The Sheridan Pellet, the true trash-can cylindrical pellet!
Then here comes Dr Beeman.. With those fancy catalogs..
Imagine see your first Feinwerkbau (fwb) 124 Deluxe Pellet Rifle. 177..
The First Magnum Air Rifle...I still drool over them..

So Beeman starts to market the .20 cal..
Introducing a line of pellets you would drive to rob your sister's piggy bank to get some!!
Those Fancy shiny new Pellet called the Silver Jet... Those little guys were pretty accurate out of my old Sheridan!!

nothing like a bit of snake oil....reckon we've all had a taste of that.

It was a long time ago, I was 7-8 years old and already paying attention to the fraternal banter of my father & two uncles.
BSA v Webley v German   Crosman v Sheridan
177 v 20 v 22,
break-barrel v sidelever v pump.
pointed v wadcutter v round
12g v 20g.... SxS v O/U.... pump v SA

and before the ban.... 9mm v 45 v 357 v 38sp

my first experience of a Feinwerkbau was a 300s
And contrary to the 124... HW 35 & HW80 were my first German air rifles.
Even though my father had suggested a Diana  ;)

Mine started life as a .22, then Rhys sold me a .177 barrel which made it better inn my opinion, especially for ease of POI choice, then I got bored and converted to .20 with a Walther barrel I bought from Ping, another R7OC member. I've never looked back. Shooting JSB Exacts, it's perfect and drops the quarry without drama.
