Good day yesterday as my drivers were on strike which left me with nothing to do. Three squirrels and one rabbit around a small pine wood I shoot.
One of the squirrels was inside the pheasant pen which gave me a tricky shot through the chicken wire. The first shot hit a twig that was resting on the fence, I didn't see it due to focusing beyond it and it blurred into the foreground, but, a perfect shot after all. Second shot ricocheted slightly off the chicken wire and hit the squirrel somewhere in the lung area and it dropped straight away with one foot still gripping the branch it had been sitting on. Then, less than a minute later I heard a chattering/barking sound and saw a cheeky little sod running down a branch trying to scare me off. He stood his ground as I took aim but it was so close that I couldn't focus on him so he took a shoulder shot and dropped off the branch onto the woodland floor. Then, to my surprise he got up and ran up a big pine tree and disappeared into an old woodpecker hole, "that's that" I thought. As I picked up my tripod and started to walk further in I spotted a head poking out of the hole and thought "no way!" But, on scoping in he was clearly dead. After that I decided I was hungry and made for home and a bit of rest while I watched some of Clarksons Farm.
