Title: Adjusting Power.
Post by: ChrisP111 on June 28, 2023, 02:40:57 PM
Hi all,
This is my first post since joining a while ago, due to issues and problems in my life that have now been resolved.
I needed to buy a new chrono as my old one failed while testing a springer after I tuned it.
I decided to check my Rapid, 12lb .177 flavour that has been unmolested, and is surprisingly consistent at only two fps over ten shots. I think it's all down to my KevG reg. Getting to my problem, I've adjusted it, as it was shooting 11.9, but it seems reluctant to come down after over a full turn outwards! Do I need to adjust the reg down a touch or is there something else I need to do.
Thanks in advance for any advice given.

       Chris.

If you are at the limit of Hammer adjustment..... Yes....

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for your reply. Is it a balancing act between the two? I'm a bit reluctant to touch the reg as it was set up by Mr G himself. 🤔

A few ways of doing it.
Look at the length of the hammer pip.  If its unmolested it should be fine, but if its short it may have been replaced to gain power.
Adjust the reg pressure down.
Trim the spring (properly by flattening a coil and finishing the edges)
Remove any pre load washers.

The difference between 11.9 and a safe 11 is very minimal in terms of preload etc.  Even half a spring coil would probably be enough.

Kind Regards,
Rhys

Hi Chris...
Well Yes there is a balancing act you want to achieve.
The Rule is to adjust you power level about 10 to 15% high on 75% hammer pre-load.
Then dial the hammer down from there...
This  so you are not Running the Hammer on FULL Pre-Load(horrible cocking)
This will also translate to better Efficiency!
 ;)  ;)  ;)
KevG is the Master on this... for at least the 12 Fpe Guys,,
But this is what I shoot for in FAC/Export MKII...When Reg'd

     Chris.

He probably used a different pellet & got a lower figure, I'd back off the reg a 1/4 turn, just remove the reg complete, hold the core shaft still with a hex key, turn the nut 1/4 turn anti clockwise, pop it back in, 10 shots to settle & put 10 over the chrono.

Hi all,
Thanks for all your valuable input. As it was shooting so consistently, I'm going to return the hammer spring to its original setting and just try backing off the reg a tad. Hopefully that simple............I like simple😁 I'll let you know how it goes.

  Thank you all again.

dont touch the reg set pressure adjust with hammer pre load or tavel.if it's one of my regs dont use an xkey you will screw the core up its T15 torx bit

Hi again,
I decided to leave the reg alone as directed by Mr God (KevG) as it's one of his he made for me in March. I sorted the spring and now have a very respectable average of 11.1 fpe with a spread of 7. Now to put a new Hawke Vantage 30 WA SF IR Scope on her, and then to the range sometime next week. 👍

Thanks again everyone for your invaluable input, and I'll keep you updated on how she performs.

       Chris.

I,m using one of Kevg's regs on my new Mk1 block I made, i turned the pressure down to 70bar and tuned it as described. You can see how amazing his regs are. I thought the fx chrono was broken so swapped kevs reg out to try a lane reg I had but the spreads opened up considerably. Kevs regs are superb, beautiful machined and very easy to adjust. I've never seen spreads so good, I put it down to the reg.

you must have done an amazing job of that block m8 and fitting and balancing every thing up.you only need one weak link in the chain to upset consistentcy.

chris don't set your reg to the same pressure as millingman as,his block is ported like a mk2 so can run at lower pressure.

This is why I like mk1 unregulated rapids...more simple to work on 😁

Kev,
I took your advice and left the reg as you sent it, and altered the spring. Got a consistent reading of 11.1 fpe. I'm at Petes Airgun Farm tomorrow so I'll let you know how she performs. If you remember she was shooting a bit wild, so I'm hoping it was because of being over the 12 limit making it a bit erratic. 🤞
