Title: Walnut stock oil
Post by: Lewis86 on October 27, 2020, 10:58:15 PM
Just wondering what oil people are using on their walnut stocks? I've always used Philips English walnut oil. Gave my stock a rub down with it yesterday morning. Came out quite well. Not sure if the stock had been oiled since it was new, seemed very dry.

My Personal Favorite stock finish is a very old 4oz bottle of Tru-Oil.
I was told by a good friend/gunsmith and stock maker...
Tru-oil only gets better with age!
I have a large bottle of Fresh  Tru-Oil, that I use to fill the old small bottle..and to thin what's in the small bottle if needed...
I use #0000 steel wool to apply the first couple of coats.
Lightly Sand with 600 grit in between..
Then hand rub the last coats...

It will give you a deep Gloss finish.
If this is not your cup of tea, lightly wipe it done with with #0000 steel wool....wipe down

here is an example
Original Theoben oil finish compared to Tru-Oil(6 or 8 hand rubbed coats)

Good Luck,

I only ever use boiled linseed oil have done so for many years.
The more coats you put on the better it gets.
The good thing about boiled linseed oil is you don't have to refinish the whole stock if you need to make a repair.

Can you keep topping up the stock with Tru-Oil as an ongoing nourishment or once you got it to how you want it do you leave it?

Watch this guys videos all he use on his stocks is boiled linseed oil.
There is a proper way way to apply all oil products to stocks and also many a wrong way as shown on many a video.
enjoy.
PS I have always used his method for many years as when at times I have used tru oil there is an oil added to that mix called tung oil which never dries and in warmer months comes tacky and can become dull at times.

Take note on how much oil you use on your stocks and the real drying times is also very important.

Tru-Oil is an interesting oil/finish...
It is refined Linseed oil with the non-volatile compounds removed...
So it dries to a nice finish....
But you can re-apply to freshen up or repair the finish!!

Thanks for info Kev and Stu.

I use CCL on my shotties, which is a linseed based oil. But was wondering what to use on these 2 on the attached pics.  The top rapid is an original untouched but the stock has a glass finish but it's not a varnish.  The darker stocked rapid has a lovely grain but duller finish.  There is no need to refinish the stocks but I do like to nourish the wood from time to time.  Will an application of boiled linseed or another be ok?

Everyone has their Secret Sauce for their Wood Stocks!!
Oil is one.... what you like and.or was told to use...
I Personally use a Hard Wax to preserve the finish!

I think that a traditional boiled linseed oil finish cannot be beaten by any of the commercially made products. It takes longer, but so what. Simply no comparison.
