Title: HW98 Springer
Post by: Topsparx1 on October 08, 2020, 11:15:32 AM
Guys anybody own one of these ?? I had a go of a friends one recently and now I want one, it was a .177 variety and has been through Tony Walls hands at Sandwell Field Sports. It was so smooth and easy to use, Ive only used very basic springers and I inherited a Webley Xocet in .22 that was my Dads it is awful twangy kicks like a mule and is not accurate at all. This HW98 though is a different rifle though its the newer version with the screw on mod conversion. Does anyone use theirs for hunting or is it all about PCP's now for hunting ??

Hi I've not got one but fancy one. I've a tx200 with a Tony leach 22 mm piston in .177. I will get one sometime, springers are fine for hunting you won't run out of air😊

Hi Topsparx1.

It sounds like your Webley has a ox spring fitted at some time but it can be sorted very easy with a titan main spring and a extended main spring dampener and top hat.
That will get rid of the recoil and that twang.

I at times go out with my 1982 HW 80 a cracking bit of kit after I tuned it.
It has stood the test of time and never lets me down.

Regards Kev.

I have had a couple of 98'S. can't fault them at all. Respond very well from a tune, even just a strip, polish and re-lube works wonders. I've always fancied one in .20. They come up for sale or swap regular on mewe, people always seem to want to swap for a HW97k or a TX200.

Well Ive succumbed to temptation and ordered a .177 HW98 from Mundilar, I went to them cos they sell the 98 with the original wood stock but with the threaded barrel, all the RFDs I spoke to in the UK only have the non threaded barrel unless you want to spend £620 for the laminate version. I wanted to be able to fit a mod to it for shooting/testing in the garden without annoying my anti shooting neighbour, and if I take it out rabbiting the little fellas wont hear me 😁

I'll do some pics and a short review straight out the box, chrono some strings, shoot some 25yard groups etc. I heard they can be a bit twangy when new so a drop in Tinbum kit will probably be the first upgrade. Can't wait being delivered next Tuesday hopefully

Well gotta say using a springer is a whole world different to a PCP, I tried a few shots through the combro and found a problem, I cant do the out the box testing cos the spring supplied with the rifle is a "European" spring and needs to be swapped out immediately for a UK spring 😳 I'm sending the action over to a guy who does a top job on the internals of HW98's, so when it comes back all 'sorted' glided piston, deburred, top hat, spring guides, cylinder polished etc I can start testing, hopefully in a couple of weeks time.

lol actually its a German spring and will be 6ft/lbs, you would have needed to purchase an export spring to get it to uk spec, who you getting to tune it for you?
